Moving Off from the Kerb in South Australia
Moving off from the kerb tests mirror use, signal timing, blind-spot observation, giving way and smooth vehicle control.

What the manoeuvre assesses
Signal timing
Signal right for at least five seconds before leaving the kerb.
Observation
Check mirrors first, then complete a final right mirror and blind-spot check before moving.
Control
Move into the lane smoothly without rolling back, stalling or making another road user react.
Simple sequence: mirrors, signal, wait, prepare, mirrors again, right blind spot, give way, look forward, move smoothly, cancel signal.
Step-by-step
- Secure the vehicle and prepare the correct gear and pedal control.
- Check the centre mirror and right mirror.
- Signal right for at least five seconds.
- Prepare enough power and control for a smooth start.
- Check the centre mirror, right mirror and right blind spot again.
- Give way to all traffic already using the lane.
- Look forward, release the park brake and move smoothly.
- Build speed safely, stay in lane and cancel the signal.
Training tip: if you are not sure the gap is safe, wait.
Moving off uphill
Automatic
Prepare enough power and release the park brake under control.
Manual
Use the clutch friction point and enough power to avoid stalling or rolling backwards.
Common mistakes
- Signalling for less than five seconds.
- No final right blind-spot check.
- Moving into a gap that makes another road user brake or change lane.
- Looking sideways while the car starts moving.
- Rolling backwards or stalling on a hill.
- Forgetting to cancel the signal.
