Which Pathway Applies to You?
Visiting South Australia
A visitor may usually drive the same class of vehicle allowed by a current overseas licence, subject to that licence’s conditions and South Australian law. Carry the required licence documents and passport.
Direct Transfer or Service SA Review
The official checker may direct you to a direct transfer or an in-person Service SA review. Permanent residents must obtain an SA licence or permit within 90 days of becoming a permanent resident of South Australia.
Testing Required
Your pathway may include theory, the Hazard Perception Test and a practical assessment. Complete only the steps shown by the official checker or Service SA.

Important: do not automatically apply for an ordinary Learner’s Permit
Passing myLs does not necessarily mean an overseas licence holder should select the ordinary online Learner’s Permit application. Once an SA licence or Learner’s Permit is issued, the overseas licence is no longer valid for independent driving in South Australia.
Confirm whether Service SA will issue a temporary driving permit or another document for your transfer pathway before applying.
Documents and English Translations
Driving as a Visitor
- Current overseas driver’s licence
- English translation or International Driving Permit when required
- Passport when requested by police
- No disqualification from driving in any country
An IDP must be issued by the same country as the overseas licence and carried with that licence.
Applying for an SA Licence
- Original overseas licence
- Evidence of identity and residency documents
- Original official English translation if the licence is not in English
- Any Service SA instructions or completed test results
Acceptable translations include qualifying NAATI translations, certain Australian consular translations or approved government translating services.
Your Possible Transfer Process
The official checker decides which steps apply. Do not assume that every applicant must complete all six.
1Check your official eligibility.
Answer the Service SA questions about residency, licence origin, age and licence class.
2Prepare original documents.
Take the required identity, residency and licence documents, plus an official translation when required.
3Visit Service SA.
Service SA confirms the pathway, records your documents and advises which permit or tests apply.
4Complete theory or HPT when required.
This may include myLs, an in-person theory test and the Hazard Perception Test.
5Complete practical assessment when required.
The current official pathway may use VORT or CBT&A. Happy Driving provides lessons and VORT preparation but does not offer CBT&A assessment.
6Return to Service SA.
Complete the official application after meeting the requirements shown for your situation.

- Driving normally but becoming rushed during a formal assessment.
Prepare Before Your First Lesson
- Your original overseas licence and expiry date.
- Official English translation or IDP where applicable.
- Your residency or visa status and the date permanent residency began, if relevant.
- Any Service SA result, Learner’s Permit, temporary permit or completed test information.
- Your Australian driving experience and preferred test timeframe.
2027 Driver-Testing Reform
Applying now: follow the current Service SA pathway. Existing VORT and CBT&A arrangements remain in place until the reform starts, and current authorised examiners may continue conducting tests.
Expected change: the new system is expected to begin in the first half of 2027. DIT states that overseas licence conversion will then require the new practical driving test with a government examiner, replacing the current Class C VORT and CBT&A pathways.
