How to Apply for myLs in South Australia

For most new learners, myLs is the main online learning and assessment pathway replacing the traditional in-person learner theory test. This guide explains Service SA identity setup, mySAGOV enrolment, applying for a learner’s permit after passing, and the different outcome for an overseas licence transfer.

Age timeline: you can enrol in and complete myLs from 15 years and 9 months. You must wait until your 16th birthday or later to apply for a learner’s permit. Supervised driving can begin only after the permit is issued.

mySAGOV login and driver-licensing setup

A mySAGOV email login or vehicle-registration record does not always mean your identity, photograph and driver-licensing record are ready for myLs. Log in and check whether Enrol in myLs appears under My services.

First-time applicant with no SA licence record

Attend a Service SA centre with evidence of your name, date of birth, signature and South Australian address.
Complete identity verification and have your photograph taken.
Create or connect a personal mySAGOV account.
Enrol in and pay for myLs through Service SA or My services.

Already have mySAGOV, an SA credential or vehicle registration?

Enrol in myLs is visible

Your account and driver record are likely connected, so you can normally enrol and launch the course online.

The service is missing

Your identity, photograph or record may be incomplete or not linked. Contact Service SA rather than creating duplicate accounts.

Vehicle registration only

Rego alone does not complete myLs identity setup. An SA licence, learner’s permit or Proof of Age Card is used as the primary online identity credential.

Completing myLs

Use a computer, tablet or phone web browser; the course is not completed inside the mySAGOV app.
Select Launch myLs from the dashboard or My services.
Complete the road-rule learning and learner theory test within the access period.
Remember that passing the test does not itself authorise driving.

Ordinary new learner: once you are at least 16, choose Apply for a learner’s permit in mySAGOV, confirm the details and pay. You can then use the temporary permit and add the digital permit to the app while the physical card is posted.

Overseas licence transfer: do not select the wrong permit

Do not select Apply for a learner’s permit unless Service SA has specifically instructed you to do so.

Once an SA learner’s permit is issued, the overseas licence can no longer be used for independent driving in South Australia and learner conditions apply.

After the theory requirement, Service SA may issue either a temporary driving permit or a learner’s permit, depending on the person’s licence, residency, age, driving history and transfer pathway. Attend Service SA with the original overseas licence, official translation where required, identity documents and any instructions already provided.

Permit duration: use the expiry date and conditions printed on the permit issued to you. Past applicants may have received different periods.
