The Hazard Perception Test checks whether you can recognise developing hazards and choose the right time to slow, wait or act. This guide explains the current mySAGOV process and presents 35 reconstructed practice scenarios based on past test-taker experience.
How to Complete the HPT Through mySAGOV
- Use a web browser on a computer, tablet or phone; the test is not completed inside the mySAGOV app.
- Choose Enrol in hazard perception test.
- Pay the current $37 fee.
- Select Launch hazard perception test.
- You have 12 months from enrolment. Online attempts can be repeated during that period without another test fee.

When should you slow down?
1/35 — Vehicle reversing from a driveway
Suggested response: respond as soon as it begins reversing.
2/35 — Pedestrian pushing a pram near the road
Suggested response: respond as you approach and the risk of entering the lane becomes apparent.
5/35 — T-intersection warning sign
Suggested response: respond when you see the warning sign or just after passing it.
6/35 — Car braking and bus preparing to merge
Suggested response: the earliest safe response is when the car ahead brakes; at the latest, when the bus indicates and begins moving.
11/35 — Oncoming vehicle enters your lane
Suggested response: respond immediately.
12/35 — Night bend with a 55 km/h advisory speed
Suggested response: respond when the warning sign appears.
14/35 — Vehicle ahead indicates right
Suggested response: respond when you recognise the turning intention.
15/35 — Truck reversing from a driveway
Suggested response: respond as soon as it starts reversing.
18/35 — Oncoming vehicle crosses the centre line
Suggested response: respond immediately.
19/35 — Right-hand bend on a residential road
Suggested response: respond when it becomes clear that a lower speed is needed.
